Lecture Reflection (4).

Today Kip's Lecture was all about mapping, starting out with literal maps of the world, and moving on to exploring maps of the incomprehensibles (space, vision, sound, multiples, physicality, language, social activity, time, and more).  I found the discussion about the mapping of beauty particularly interesting.  Mattel makes all different types of barbies that are supposed to encompass many different cultures and aspects of the world's people, right? So how come each barbie's features (with exception of the asian barbie's slightly tilted eyes) all the same?  Each essentially has the exact same features of the original barbie's appearance, who was white.  So good job Mattel on expanding your collection, but you forgot to embrace each culture's unique aspects.  It really makes you question "beauty" and what children are essentially learned to accept as America's ideal beaut.  I also found Nina Katchadourian's documentation of the graffiti bathroom's extremely interesting.  In essence, you can not get any more truthful than that there, complete strangers writing in a continuous conversation without ever seeing each other.  Lastly was the video done by Jean-Pierre Gorin, Poto and Cabengo (1979). I thought it was so interesting that these two little beings could completely make up a language of their own.  When in fact, they didn't really.  I mean, after hearing their sporadic mother speak and their problemed father, it makes complete sense where these twins could come up with a language as such!  Anyways, I definitely want to watch more of that video on my own!!
